Understanding yourself… To become a better player. Timo Boll, table tennis world number one

When he became number one at the age of 21, eight years ago, Timo Boll from Germany, did not believe he was the best… »I did not deserve it » he said. Now , recaptured the number one spot, after 88 months of chinese domination, he claims that he is a much better player,  » I can play consistently at a very high level »

Let’s see his view on his mental approach of that particular situation : « the first time when I became number one, I felt the chinese players were much better than me. I felt I did not deserve to be number 1 although I won the world cup and the European championship. It was so new. My opponents were my idols in some ways. »

He did not have good runs in all important major tournaments, despite many victories on ITTF tour ( he won two world tour). Six world championship and three olympics, but never won a singles title…

What are the reasons he can tell us?

« it is not so easy…you have to be really fit at the right moment, I was not mentally fresh and my preparation was not perfect..perhaps I played too many tournaments….sometimes also, my opponent was in very good shape, and the is no big gap between number 20 and me.  Unfortunately, I never put together my shape, my body, my mind, ..but I am working on that now ».

Moreover, he is telling us an important aspect of his personality…explaining perhaps his non belief being  « the umber one » at that time…

« I am a pessimistic person. It put pressure on me. During the game, I feel confident. But before the game I was always afraid of losing. », despite a great career, there was some missing titles… But I never had such expectations of myself Now, I will try my best the next few years to push myself really hard to optimize my abilities, and then we will see what happens… If I can win those missing titles or not… Then in the end, I  can say I gave my best…I hope I can get what I feel I deserve. » now, knowing more about himself, and eight more years…he is more prepared for the next challenge, London 2012,  » I think my chance is better than ever because

I am better player than ever, and I have more experience than before. At age of 30, Boll believes he is now approaching his « real peak ».

Mental process… Training to make it easier down the stretch under pressure

Nick Watney…

Who is he?

Professional golf player.

Just won the WGC Cadillac championship in Doral – Florida.

29 years old, and Nick already showed that he was capable of taking on the elite the last

few years …but often failed, at the critical moments…like last year at the USPGA championship …three shot lead into the final round, bit blew up with a terrible last round…

Going through this last day… How did he manage to forget about the let down and the disappointment of the way he performed that day?

First of all, Nick Watney, coached by Butch Harmon, former Tiger Wood’s swing guru, said that these final round failures came into his mind the later stage of his win this last Sunday.

Because there is nothing can you do. It is popping into your mind. No blockage possible…

So, what did he do? What did he think about? What was his « secret »?

« I just wanted to allow myself to play well, and execute and I was able to do that »

« mentally, I work with Morris Pickens (sport psychologist). He helped me just to develop a process to think that the putts I hit in practice are the same as the putt on the 18th »

« obviously, that is not true but if you can think that way, it makes it a lot weaker to putt when you are under pressure »

« it has not been really a mechanical, it has been more that mental approach »

« now, I am proud I was able to mentally and physically execute down the stretch under pressure. I will store that in my memory bank »

Knowing and be aware of your flaws, getting help (from outside) and working on the solutions …Find no excuse and then…just playing and executing… Especially down the stretch and under pressure… And find the pleasure to do so…

Destination New Zealand

Nice birthday present with the announcement of my selection with the French team for the world championship in Christchurch (New Zealand).
Like rugby‘s players will do in next fall 2011, I would like to give my best and help France reach the highest position possible next February.
Now, let’s be prepared for this world event.
6 more days in December, 31 days in January, and 20 more days in February.
57 days to be fit and ready for my next goal.
As setting objectives are essential to give your best. I will be showing my progress during the next 57 days before the competition, and during the 2 weeks of the team and individual events.
